Poetics story
It was the 4th of July on a Saturday morning when Katherine had gone out for a run. She'd always go for a run no matter the whether or the mood that she was in. As she went around the block, she noticed that there was a man in a black hoodie behind her following her. She started running faster and he went chasing after her and as he was catching up, Katherine noticed something about him. Katherine suddenly stopped and told him, "I know it's you."
It was Noah, Katherine's boyfriend since the eig grade. Katherine and Noah would always prank each other. At the end of each year, they would add up all the times that they'd successfully prank each other. Katherine always won.
Noah asked, "How did you know?"
"I knew it was you because I noticed that there was a stain on your jeans. You had gotten those jeans stained when I pranked you." Katherine replied with a smile.
Every year since they were in the third grade, they would spend the 4th of July together and watch the fireworks. This year though, it seemed like it was going to rain so they didn't know if they were going to see the fireworks, but either way Katherine loved when it would rain. She has a list of all the things that she would like to do whether they were small or big goals and she promised herself that she'd accomplish them before she died. One of them was to stand in the rain for as long as she could. Another was to lay in the middle of a vacant road and look up at the stars all night long. Katherine told Noah that she wanted to go out in the rain and Noah thought that he should do this since the fireworks were probably not going to happen.
Later on in the day when it started to rain, they went outside and stood there for a while, then splashed each other with the puddles. The rain started to clear, it was only sprinkling now so people came out of their houses and saw the fireworks. Katherine and Noah always thought that fireworks were beautiful explosions lighting up the world. They would always wait outside until the last firework was done. When the day was about to be over, Katherine told Noah to get in her car, but she she not tell him why. She drove far away from the city where hardly any cars ever passed by and stopped. She got off and layed down.
"What are you doing? You can be killed!" Noah had said with some confusion to why she would ever risk her life like that.
"Not many cars drive by here and if it does, we'll hear it coming. I just want to stay here until the sun rises, but if you want to go, then we can go." Katherine replied with some hope that he'd want to stay.
Noah so hesitant said, "Fine we'll stay, but only until the sun rises and then we'll go home." Noah could never say no to Katherine. He would always want her to be happy so he always did what was necessary.
They stayed there talking until the sun rose and on the way back, Katherine had the warmest feeling that she's ever had in a very long time. She felt loved and nothing could ever make her think otherwise. She'd fallen for her best friend and her best friend had fallen for her. At that moment she realized that her life is beautiful and that she shouldn't throw it away. Noah was her hero and he'd probably never know it, but he was.
